A Breakthrough Success Story

I want to introduce you this week to Susan. Susan has taken the Learning Breakthrough Program to areas that people have been asking about for years.

Look at this recent news article found in the largest newspaper in N. Ireland that Susan recieved by helping parents and families in the UK.

A little background

Let me tell you about a few things I have learned from Susan after working with her for the past 2 years:

Susan worked in insurance for 26 years (the last 15 as a financial advisor) before deciding to provide the Learning Breakthrough Program.

She started providing the program to her friends on a trial basis, in her part time.

Now Susan makes a full-time living helping and supporting people who are looking for solutions that the Learning Breakthrough Program can provide.

The Interview

Last week I interviewed Susan over Skype, to talk about the successes she has experienced in the past couple years.

Here are a few takeaways from the interview

She had 2 young boys struggling with low concentration, bad behavior and learning difficulties.

School did not help, the principal (headmaster) made her feel like she was doing a bad job parenting.

Her oldest son, diagnosed with ADHD, had a complete turnaround and is now in a prestigious culinary school training to be a chef.

Her youngest son, diagnosed with Dyslexia, dramatically improved his reading level, among other things, and now plays Scrabble with the Oxford Dictionary with his mother.

Susan invested in a program that was based on the Learning Breakthrough Program, that included clinic visits and monitoring that cost her over £2,000 per child ($4000 US Dollars).

We've been dragging our feet

in Learning Breakthrough

I've gotten a lot of people begging me for something over the years...

Many of you have throughout the years asked me to provide you with another set of tools that would revolutionize the way that the Learning Breakthrough Program is helping people around the world.

What I didn’t know was how to actually do it. It was an endeavor that was going to take a ton of effort, both in time and in resources. And it was completely speculative as to whether it would work or not at all.

What has happened with the Learning Breakthrough Program over the past couple years has been nothing short of phenomenal, let me explain...

A little bit of background

Since we launched the revised Learning Breakthrough Program in 2005, we have sold thousands of kits worldwide.

Many to America, Great Britain and Europe, in the Middle East, in China and Australia. All without the instruction manual or the follow-along DVD being translated into any language besides English.

We have received great feedback from people and families that actually used the program daily, and there have been some great results with children suffering from ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism and other learning difficulties, as well as adults.

We sold and shipped these kits worldwide, and helped people who had questions and struggles with integrating the Program into their daily lives by answering phone calls and emails when they came in.

But of the many thousands of programs that were sold, we are certain that there are many people who, for one reason or another, have not used the Program properly or consistently enough to achieve the results that they actually bought the program for.

Numerous companies with similar therapies (most of which base their products off of Dr. Belgau’s research, but without compensating him... don’t get me started on that subject) have helped people diagnose and treat learning and attention disorders, by providing hands-on assistance and support for families who are seeking help.

You may or may not be aware that I was a part of one of those companies, that used Dr. Belgau’s research, built their own product and started launching expensive clinics all over the world.

But then I left that company and began to work with Dr. Belgau directly to develop the Learning Breakthrough Program into what it is today.

And even though we sell a great number of these kits, which are WAY more affordable than the $4000+ fees that these clinics would charge for the exact same results, we always had a problem with our program that the clinics did not.

It has to do with human psychology. People who buy a more expensive program along with what appears to be a medical clinic backing it up with a diagnostic process and regular checkups... well, those people tend to actually use the program at a higher rate of compliance.

It’s something that we have been reluctant to get into, not only for the cost and expense of setting up clinics, but the reason that I developed the Learning Breakthrough Program with Dr. Belgau was so that it was affordable, and we could get it into as many peoples’ hands as possible. We wanted to radically affect families that were suffering from these problems, and statistics show that there are members of 1 in 4 families who can benefit and improve the quality of life from this type of help.

We had a few ideas all along, and numerous customers kept on asking us to provide something more, so that they could help their friends and family to achieve the same results they themselves got.

Then we became aware of a remarkable individual who really wanted to take it to the next level, and was willing to bear the burden herself...

And now for the good part

We got approached by a woman in the UK who was an insurance salespersonat the time. She had had her 2 sons go through the other program that I was previously involved in, the one that set up clinics worldwide before they went bankrupt in 2008.

She was thrilled about the Learning Breakthrough Program, which was the basis for the therapy her sons went through, and purchased one for her family, after that clinic shut its doors.

She would go to her friends, and family and people in her local area and get them onboard with the Learning Breakthrough Program and coach them through it.

She had experienced the powerful results that the program brought to her own sons, and was determined to see it work in others around her.

Over the past 2 years, she has held regular meetings, inviting people to come and see a demonstration of the Learning Breakthrough Program, and has been coaching them through the process of using the program daily, and answering questions that anyone might have.

And she has found a way to make a healthy income doing this as well. She has replaced her insurance-business income, and is on track next year to far exceed what she has made in the past.

Recently she got some major news coverage in the UK for her work, and the results that she is helping other families to achieve.

In October, we are planning something really special to announce here at Learning Breakthrough.

But first, I want to see how many of you are interested in hearing her story. If you want to see some of the details of what successes she has had over the past 2 years, please let me know by leaving a comment below this post.

In the coming week, I will be interviewing her, and getting her to tell her story, first the breakthroughs she achieved with her own 2 boys, then the breakthroughs she has helped other families achieve, and then the business she has built around the Learning Breakthrough Program in Ireland.

So stay tuned next week for the exciting details of her story.

Dyslexia symptoms and biological dysfunction According to some internationally recognized diagnostic manuals, dyslexia is a condition in which the normal ways of skills’ acquisition are blocked in the early stages of development. This is not a consequence of absent opportunities for learning or some form of brain injury or disease. It is considered that the causes of dyslexia are rooted in cognitive functioning abnormalities resulting from some type of biological dysfunction. That is why, dyslexia is defined as problematic learning which limits the ability of students to have a full command over information processing, motor skills, and the working memory. In individuals with the disorder, difficulties in recognizing, identifying, and discovering stimuli have been reported. In turn, these lead to difficulties in mastering some or all skills associated with speech, reading, spelling, writing, and arithmetic.

More research on cerebellum's impact on speech, language and working memory

A newly published article by the Department of Neurology, Division of Cognitive Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine outlines another look into the role the cerebellum plays in language development and cognition. There are many researchers investigating this part of the brain that is so deeply involved in movement and a huge variety of "automated" functions. The exact logic of how the brain uses all its various systems to divide and tackle the complex cognitive tasks it performs every day is still in its infancy. However, the efficiency of cerebellar functions and how it can be enhanced through calibrated neuro-motor and vestibular training is constantly being examined as a likely method of improving brain fitness generally and as a way to overcome specific learning challenges.

The entire article is available here: Functional Topography of the Cerebellum in Verbal Working Memory, with the abstract printed below for your convenience.

Abstract :

Speech—both overt and covert—facilitates working memory by creating and refreshing motor memory traces, allowing new information to be received and processed. Neuroimaging studies suggest a functional topography within the sub-regions of the cerebellum that subserve verbal working memory. Medial regions of the anterior cerebellum support overt speech, consistent with other forms of motor execution such as finger tapping, whereas lateral portions of the superior cerebellum support speech planning and preparation (e.g., covert speech). The inferior cerebellum is active when information is maintained across a delay, but activation appears to be independent of speech, lateralized by modality of stimulus presentation, and possibly related to phonological storage processes. Motor (dorsal) and cognitive (ventral) channels of cerebellar output nuclei can be distinguished in working memory. Clinical investigations suggest that hyper-activity of cerebellum and disrupted control of inner speech may contribute to certain psychiatric symptoms.

Pendulum Ball & Perceptual Motor Skills with Balance Board

How to adjust the distance between the Belgau Balance Board and the arc of the pendulum ball is a common question for those starting to use the program. The following answer to an email question from a new client should be helpful.

"The pendulum ball should swing out and back to ABOUT the belly button height on the user. This is not mandatory. You may find that it is more comfortable if the ball comes up a little higher. Whatever works best and gives the user the most precise and consistent feeling for tracking and hitting the ball is a good setting. The final setting varies of course from person to person so feel free to adjust the distance for comfort and ease of use.

My usual recommendation is to start with the board about 4 feet from the ball and adjust from there. The hanging height and swing pattern of the pendulum ball will have a lot to do with the distance that eventually gets decided on.

I hope this is helpful. What ever is comfortable and helpful and keeps the eye tracking, movement preparation and feedback feeling smooth is the place to end up."

We are always happy to help out with more subtle details and any other questions that come up. Learning Breakthrough's equipment is very specialized and things that we take for granted are not always so intuitive to new users. Keep up the daily work and let us know about other equipment set up questions that come up.

Belgau book excerpt: body movement defined by brain processes and vice versa

From the upcoming release of A Life In Balance: Discovery of a Learning Breakthrough

The Still-Missing Core

"One of the basic principles of a two-engine airplane is the synchronicity between the two engine systems that are fixed on either side of the plane. If one engine puts out more thrust than the other, it causes problems in flight. If the disparity is sufficiently severe, it can cause the plane to go out of control and crash. Remembering this principle caused an idea to begin to percolate: was the issue these children were experiencing related to the balance between the two sides of their bodies?"

"In the mid-1960s, It was not a popular idea to look for learning ability in the body, but the more I observed the children in my classroom, the more the two problems seemed corollary. And why shouldn’t they be? The movement of the body through space is defined by brain functions, just as the ability to read and do arithmetic are defined by brain functions. If the knee bone’s connected to the thigh bone, wouldn’t it make sense that the various departments in the brain are connected, too? I began to wonder: what if an individual’s body provides a graphic representation of the inner workings of the brain?"

MS Comment: There are so many background insights in this book relating to "basic operating principles" and basic common sense that sensory integration, vestibular remediation and somatosensory become actually exciting to study. A more profound model of human cognition than you would ever expect upon initial reflection.

Facebook for kids - teachable moments in the age of social media parenting.

This article on Business Week's parenting site (working parents-and Facebook for preteens) resonated with us on several levels as the description of the challenges facing the parents of pre-teens were an exact list of the concerns and thoughts that some of our LBP staff have been struggling with!

Its a brave new world and teaching our kids to walk on "internet streets" is as important as teaching them to cross the street safely in our own neighborhoods. Hopefully this is a useful analogy, but a scary one at the same time. Especially for those parents that don't have many online skills and whose children are so far ahead of them on the social media front. Be safe and learn enough to teach them the rules of the road so they'll have the tools to cross the street safely...even when you're not walking right next to them.

First LBP post by Marc

Welcome. As we launch this blog and work to communicate with our program users and readers from many fields, we plan to do as much listening as talking. We will be elaborating on our mission and better defining what we call "The Belgau Hypothesis" and we are thrilled to have the input of blog readers regardless of their background.

LBP has had much anecdotal success for a couple of decades on the learning disabilities and cognitive efficiency fronts. The program continues to be used by therapists and doctors as an "alternative treatment" for challenges like auditory processing delay, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, dyspraxia, memory, comprehension, executive function and as an academic improvement tool for users of all ages. However, it still needs the type of scientific validation that takes great time and resources to establish. If the web is good at anything...it is moving a clinically proven concept like LBP to a community supported, scientifically validated treatment model. We invite the assistance of all like-minded supporters as well as skeptics. We believe that Frank Belgau's work will only become more widely appreciated as time goes on.

Years of working with Frank and Beverley Belgau (and their son Eric as well as others close to the program) has generated a working hypothesis of cognitive organization (based on sensory integration treatment with a precise vestibular remediation component). We intend to see this become the basis for the future scientific study of LBP. Supporting and documenting the general efficacy of the program is of primary importance. However, sharing relevant and helpful information, concepts and the writings of others with all who are interested in strength-based, "alternative" interventions, is a close second. Watch this space, share your thoughts and help us spread the word in what ever way you can.

Thanks for reading and for not keeping Learning Breakthrough a secret.
